Bibliotherapy

Bibliotherapy involves the use of literature to support mental health and well-being. It is considered an evidence-based treatment and is best used for mild to moderate depression, anxiety, grief, identity issues, trauma, perfectionism, relational challenges, and even general stress. By engaging reflectively with specific texts—such as novels, poetry, or self-help books– individuals can gain insights, find comfort and connection in seeing their experience represented, gain language to express things that are otherwise hard to pinpoint, and develop new coping strategies and perspectives.

For instance, Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros might be on the surface a fantasy novel full of dragons, danger, and romance, but it also resonates deeply with readers who live with chronic illness and invisible disabilities. It reflects the emotional reality, shows empowerment without erasure, and offers a new narrative for how to integrate illness into one’s identity and live a full life rather than view it as a weakness.
